Long Island Business News' (LIBN) WHO's WHO in Healthcare Professions and Healthcare Law

Dr. Arthur Kurtz is the primary Medical Director for Maryhaven, a proud affiliate agency of the Kinexion Network, a management service organization (MSO) for seven well-respected Long Island based not-for-profits that support people living with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Dr. Kurtz is responsible for the clinical oversight of the care offered to people supported by the Kinexion Network, including those who reside in individual group homes, as well as people who attend the day programs. He becomes involved in specific cases with unique challenges, and is often called on to communicate with families and/or primary care givers to optimize care as needed. On a daily basis, Dr. Kurtz is involved in issues related to health maintenance, quality of care management, as well as employee health related issues. He also works with Kinexion physical therapists, nutritionists and occupational therapists to secure approval from governmental agencies for ancillary services, such as speech, physical and/or occupational therapy. Dr. Kurtz offers some insight into what is trending in healthcare today. "The biggest healthcare trend we are seeing is consolidation in both public and private practice settings," he said. "Alliances are being formed to optimize care and more efficiently communicate with governmental agencies that oversee care." "Similar to the foundations on which Kinexion was formed, consolidation is designed to provide a solid administrative infrastructure that frees healthcare providers to focus on providing care," Dr. Kurtz said. "It is also beneficial to share intellectual resources across networks, offering advice and services as needed to the benefit of patients," he noted. "In networks such as Kinexion, care can often be extended to offer additional services. For example, when a child with disabilities grows, the network can transition him/her from a school program to another Kinexion affiliate for day habilitation services, employment or independent group home living."

Dr. Kurtz began his career at Maryhaven in 1989 and began his role as the primary Medical Director for Kinexion when the MSO was formed in 2021, expanding his responsibilities to support several affiliate nonprofits within the network.

Dr. Kurtz graduated from the Health Science Center at Brooklyn (SUNY Downstate Medical Center) and completed his residency in internal medicine at SUNY Stony Brook, followed by a fellowship in allergy and immunology at SUNY Stony Brook. He has been a practicing physician for more than 35 years and is currently registered as an internist affiliated with several community hospitals.

Kinexion is the management service organization (MSO) that gives affiliate partners the operational and financial strength so they can focus on what they do best: provide support and services that enable people living with disabilities and their families to live their best lives, for life. As a collective $250 million organization, employing 3,200 staff members, Kinexion provides services to approximately 5,000 people living with intellectual and developmental disabilities across Long Island.

There are seven affiliate agencies serving Long Island that comprise the Kinexion Network, including Independent Group Home Living Program, Inc.; The New Interdisciplinary School; The Center for Developmental Disabilities, Inc.; Angela's House; Head Injury Association, Inc.; Maryhaven, Inc.; and East End Disability Associates, Inc.
