East End Disability Associates, Inc. [EEDA]

East End Disability Associates is a grassroots organization established in 1993 by a small group of parents dedicated to advocating for their children, who believed that people of all abilities have the right to quality education, medical treatment, habilitation, and recreational services. EEDA consistently seeks to advance industry standards as we push expectations, question limitations, and strive to lead the way in our industry. We endeavor to offer services that truly celebrate each person’s individuality and to support people living with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) as they strive to become the best possible version of themselves.

EEDA’s Self-Direction services allow people with IDD and their families to develop a plan that is customized to best meet their needs and interests, allowing them to hire their own staff and spend their budgeted funds in a way that works for them. EEDA provides support brokerage and fiscal intermediary services that fund and enable tasks that support the individual in the development and implementation of a budget and the billing and payment of approved goods and services, fiscal accounting and reporting, Medicaid and corporate compliance, and general administrative and staffing services.

EEDA has ten beautiful, safe homes that foster lives of distinction for people living with IDD on the East End of Long Island. Great care is taken to balance opportunities for independence with individualized levels of oversight and guidance to ensure healthy lifestyles and to provide the best quality of life possible.

EEDA has three Day Programs that focus on community involvement to enhance the lives of people living with IDD and offer activities in the areas of self-advocacy, culinary arts and nutrition, volunteering, health and fitness, horticulture, visual arts, dance, socialization, computer training, navigating public transportation, budgeting and money skills, safety and life skills, music appreciation, community involvement, the creative arts including acting, vocal training, theater set and costume creation, and dance, as well as social and recreational activities. We also enjoy utilizing local parks for fitness activities, participating in classes and cooking projects at local churches, and volunteering at local Island Harvest sites, thrift stores, community gardens, and animal shelters.

EEDA’s Overnight Respite is a scheduled, proactive experience for adults and children aged eight years and older who live with their family in Suffolk or Nassau County. EEDA’s Overnight Respite house focuses on providing a recreational experience for program participants to make the house a place people want to stay and a place families feel comfortable leaving their loved one.

EEDA’s Adult Socialization Program is for people living with IDD who are 18 years of age or older and live independently or with a family member in the East End community. This program provides a social environment for people to make new friends and maintain old friendships while sparking new recreation and leisure interests with peers through a wide variety of recreation and leisure activities, including instructional cooking, arts and crafts, computers, music, fitness, a variety of one-on-one and group games (i.e. Bingo, Monopoly, Wii, Uno, Nintendo, Family Feud, Basketball, Kickball), movies, trips to arcade halls, local games, and parks.

EEDA’s Crisis Supports are available twenty-four hours a day to help families with a developmentally disabled family member living at home in Nassau or Suffolk County during a crisis, which varies based on the needs of the family but can be as serious as the illness or death of a caregiver, support during medical appointments, or assistance with behavioral challenges. EEDA’s Crisis Field Representatives meet with families in their homes to assess the individual, family dynamics, and environment, and develop a plan that addresses the crisis.

EEDA’s Community Habilitation Program supports people living with IDD in their home and community who live independently in their own apartment or with members of their family by developing plans based on input from the person served and their circle of support. Once a plan is created, trained staff assist the person as they work to accomplish their goals, which include everything from budgeting, shopping, socialization, attending cooking classes, volunteering in the community, assisting with medical appointments, and maintaining their home.

EEDA serves people through ISS, an OPWDD housing subsidy that helps people pay their monthly rent or mortgage, certain utilities, and other expenses. ISS supports people who want to pursue a more independent living environment as a result of their personal growth and development.

EEDA understands that the service delivery system can be difficult to navigate. Through our Family Support Services contract, we are able to offer families opportunities to learn from the experts in our field through a variety of workshops, informational seminars, and advocacy events.
